Kentucky Riverkeeper’s Inaugural Hellbender Festival
Kentucky Riverkeeper serves communities throughout the entire Kentucky River watershed, working across all counties connected by this vital waterway. While headquartered in Winchester, Clark County, our educational programming, environmental advocacy, and watershed stewardship initiatives extend throughout the watershed and, when requested, across Kentucky. Through curriculum-based educational modules, public outreach, and community partnerships, we provide accessible environmental education that empowers residents of all ages to become informed stewards of Kentucky's natural resources.
Our mission is to serve as an educator and citizen-based advocate for the responsible stewardship of the Kentucky River watershed for present and future generations.
About the Hellbender Festival
The Hellbender Festival is a free, family-friendly community celebration that uses the Eastern Hellbender—North America's largest salamander and an important indicator of clean, healthy waterways—as a symbol to inspire environmental awareness and stewardship of the Kentucky River watershed.
The festival combines education, recreation, art, music, and hands-on experiences to engage residents of all ages in learning about the importance of protecting Kentucky's rivers and streams. Through interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, educational workshops, guided activities, local artists, conservation organizations, and family-friendly entertainment, participants gain a greater understanding of water quality, native wildlife, watershed conservation, and the everyday actions that help protect these valuable natural resources.
